Job summary

Botetourt County Department of Social Services is seeking a Benefit Programs Specialist II to determine and re-determine eligibility for financial assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, and other social services. The role requires independent judgment within policy guidelines, with supervision for unusual cases.

Starting annual salary is $32,415, commensurate with experience, with a generous benefits package including retirement, life and disability insurance, leave, and health coverage.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications include a high school diploma with additional training and related work experience, or an equivalent combination.
• Skill in operating a computer and agency software.
• Strong communication (oral/written) with varied audiences; ability to gather information and make referrals.

Responsibilities

• Interviews applicants for assistance and re-determines continuing eligibility.
• Explains benefit programs and determines need for assistance.
• Processes applications for financial assistance and determines eligibility and benefit levels.
• Monitors cases for changes and updates benefit levels accordingly.
• Evaluates employability and explains client responsibilities and program availability.
