Job summary

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in History or related discipline.
  • Experience teaching in higher education or adult education.
  • Knowledge of African American history and diaspora.
  • Strong communication, organizational, instructional, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to teach evening/weekend courses.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned African American History courses in line with course descriptions and standards.
  • Develop engaging, student-centered learning experiences emphasizing inquiry, primary sources, and clear communication.
  • Present African American history in local to global contexts with diverse perspectives.
  • Maintain a Blackboard course site with materials, assignments, grades, and content.
  • Provide clear syllabus, expectations, and timely feedback on progress.
  • Use strategies to support adult and nontraditional learners in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments.
  • Maintain regular communication with students and hold office hours.
  • Monitor attendance and performance; refer students to resources as needed.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful learning environment.
  • Submit syllabi, attendance, grades, and assessment data on deadlines.
  • Participate in orientation and professional development; other instructional duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

The Evening & Weekend College is seeking qualified adjunct faculty to facilitate courses that support adult learners by delivering high-quality instruction in flexible formats, including evening, weekend, and potentially hybrid or online classes. Adjunct faculty play a critical role in supporting student success, particularly for non-traditional students balancing education with work, family, and other responsibilities.

Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned African American History courses in accordance with approved course descriptions, learning outcomes, curricula, and institutional academic standards.
  • Develop and facilitate engaging, student-centered learning experiences that emphasize historical inquiry, critical thinking, primary-source analysis, research, and clear written and oral communication.
  • Present African American history within appropriate local, national, Atlantic-world, and global contexts while incorporating diverse scholarly interpretations and perspectives.
  • Prepare and maintain an organized Blackboard course site with current instructional materials, assignments, announcements, grades, and other required course content.
  • Provide students with a clear syllabus, course expectations, grading criteria, and timely, constructive feedback on their academic progress.
  • Use appropriate instructional strategies and technology to support adult and non-traditional learners in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments.
  • Maintain regular communication with students, hold appropriate office or consultation hours, and respond promptly to questions and concerns.
  • Monitor attendance and academic performance, identify students who may need additional support, and make appropriate referrals to college resources.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, academically honest, and supportive learning environment that encourages thoughtful discussion of complex historical issues.
  • Submit syllabi, attendance records, grades, assessment data, and other required course documentation accurately and by established deadlines.
  • Participate in required orientation, professional development, departmental meetings, assessment activities, and other instructional responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree in history, African American Studies, Africana Studies, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution; doctorate preferred.
  • At least 18 graduate credit hours in History or the assigned teaching discipline, as required by institutional credentialing standards.
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education, adult education, or a comparable instructional setting.
  • Experience supporting adult and nontraditional learners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of African American history, culture, political movements, social institutions, and the African diaspora.
  • Strong communication, organizational, instructional, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible teaching schedule, including evening and weekend courses.
  • Experience teaching hybrid or online courses is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Blackboard or a comparable learning management system.
