General Definition of Work

Performs responsible technical work on an assigned shift dispatching police, fire and EMS personnel and equipment usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
  • Receiving calls for service and dispatching emergency services personnel. (The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Receives police, fire and EMS emergency and service requests and calls.
  • Operates radios, telephone, switchboard, alarm systems, recording devices and computer terminals.
  • Dispatches emergency equipment and personnel where and when needed.
  • Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio log.
  • Operates computerized interfaces for N.C.I.C. and D.C.I. systems.
  • Takes telephone calls concerning complaints, passes information on to appropriate units and makes record of calls.
  • Types and files reports and records; assigns number to complaint and arrest forms.
  • Enters and clears warrants and other information on computer terminal.
  • Maintains warrant, incident and citation logs.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system
  • General knowledge of radio and teletype procedures
  • General knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings
  • Ability to type at a reasonable rate of speed
  • Ability to speak distinctly
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public under stressful conditions
  • Skill in the operation of radio, telecommunications, computer terminal, data entry and general office equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
Requirements
  • Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Special Requirements: Obtain and maintain a current D.C.I. certification issued by the State of North Carolina.
