Job description

Position Details

Rutgers University - Newark, an urban public research anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking a Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (Provost and EVCAA) serves as the chief academic officer of Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) and is the University's principal academic architect, charged with aligning academic strategy, planning, and resource allocation with the University's mission, the RU-N Roadmap (strategic plan), and the Rutgers University strategic plan. The Provost and EVCAA will advance RU-N through deliberate and disciplined academic innovation and partner strategically with leadership and key stakeholders to move the University toward Carnegie/ACE R1 status and continued advancement in academic rankings.

Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving on the Chancellor's Cabinet, the Provost and EVCAA provide forward-thinking leadership to elevate academic excellence, research intensity, student success, and operational effectiveness at a highly diverse, urban public research university nationally recognized for social mobility, access, and opportunity.

The Provost and EVCAA partner closely with Rutgers University Academic Affairs and the Rutgers-Newark Chancellor to translate vision into execution, aligning academic strategy, resources, and performance systems to strengthen RU-N's scholarly impact, teaching and learning excellence, national reputation and rankings, and Big Ten footprint. Additionally, the Provost partners with University Academic Affairs and RU-N leadership on academic planning, accreditation, faculty affairs, academic policies, compliance, and institutional effectiveness. The Provost and EVCAA also works closely with Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, and Student Success to advance institutional strategy, student success outcomes, and academic priorities. Rutgers-Newark, established in 1946, is one of the four Chancellor-led units of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and serves as the University system's urban public research university. As an integral part of Rutgers University, Rutgers-Newark combines the strength and reputation of a major Big Ten public research institution with the agility and community engagement of a deeply urban campus.

Rutgers-Newark is an anchor institution "of and in Newark," enrolling a majority-Pell, first-generation, and commuter student body and ranked #5 nationally for social mobility while continuing to climb in public university rankings (currently 36th in the nation). Within this context, the Provost and EVCAA leads the full academic enterprise, including schools and colleges and academic affairs units central to institutional research and assessment, student success, faculty affairs, graduate and undergraduate education, and university-wide centers and institutes.

The role requires a leader who can partner effectively with the research division to expand research capacity among faculty and strengthen academic rankings while upholding RU-N's mission of access and excellence. As both a strategic and operational leader, the Provost and EVCAA is responsible for strengthening academic quality and execution and fostering a culture of excellence across a complex institution.

This includes improving academic planning and program portfolios, modernizing policies and processes, extending academic reach through innovative and market-responsive online programs and certificates, advancing data-informed decision-making, and ensuring accreditation and compliance. The Provost and EVCAA must be future-forward in building opportunity pathways from cradle to college degree as the University partners with Newark, the State of New Jersey, and the nation in workforce development and expansion.

The Provost and EVCAA play a defining role in enhancing RU-N's academic reputation, rankings, and visibility, positioning the University as a high-impact, research-intensive, urban public institution whose scholarship, graduates, and partnerships drive social mobility, economic vitality, and community transformation.
