Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of properties.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries and supporting schedules.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank, balance sheet, and general ledger.
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare property-level financial statements and management reports.
  • Review income, expenses, and account activity for accuracy.
  • Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
  • Assist with tenant billings, rent schedules, and other property-related accounting.
  • Monitor tenant accounts and resolve discrepancies.
  • Support budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
  • Coordinate with property managers, vendors, tenants, and departments.
  • Support audits with documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes.
  • Assist with special projects as assigned.

A growing organization in the Richmond, VA area is seeking an experienced Property Accountant to join its accounting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional with property or real estate experience who is looking to take on additional responsibility and build a long-term career with an organization that offers opportunities for growth.

The Property Accountant will be responsible for supporting the financial operations of a portfolio of properties, including monthly close, reconciliations, financial reporting, accounts payable, budgeting support, and property-level accounting. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of properties
  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries and supporting schedules
  • Perform monthly bank, balance sheet, and general ledger reconciliations
  • Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
  • Prepare property-level financial statements and management reports
  • Review income, expenses, and account activity for accuracy and completeness
  • Process and review accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions
  • Assist with tenant billings, rent schedules, and other property-related accounting activities
  • Monitor and reconcile tenant accounts and resolve discrepancies as needed
  • Assist with annual budgets, forecasts, and budget-to-actual variance analysis
  • Coordinate with property managers, vendors, tenants, and internal departments regarding accounting matters
  • Support internal and external audits by providing requested documentation and schedules
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained accurately and in accordance with company policies and GAAP
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting
  • Assist with special projects and other accounting initiatives as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
  • 3+ years of accounting experience; property or real estate accounting experience required
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and month-end close
  • Experience with account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting
  • Understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and tenant accounting
  • Experience with Yardi, MRI, or another property management/accounting system is a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple properties, deadlines, and priorities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with property management and accounting teams
