Job description

Are you an experienced construction Project Manager who knows how to keep complex projects, trade partners, and clients moving in the right direction? Do you thrive on solving problems in the field, building strong schedules, and communicating openly—even when the conversation is difficult? Are you ready to lead high-end remodeling projects while being part of a team that truly cares about getting it right?

If you’re a construction leader with 4+ years of project management, superintendent, or related construction experience who wants to take ownership of meaningful projects while growing your career in a values-driven, award-winning environment, we want to meet you!

Payne & Tompkins has been transforming homes and lives in Greater Cleveland since we combined our expertise over two decades ago. As a premier design-build remodeling company, we specialize in high-touch custom remodeling that helps families invest in themselves and their lifestyles, not just their homes.

Our culture is rooted in working together to get it right—values that guide everything we do. We practice open-book management with profit sharing because we believe everyone should share in our success. We’re “a little weird” in the best way possible, with monthly team events, community service through Olivia’s Dream nonprofit, Make-A-Wish partnerships, and even office Olympics.

With 55+ dedicated employees and a strong track record of growth from $3M to $22M in seven years, we’re not just a company—we’re a team building something special together.

Summary of Responsibilities

Own the construction phase of high-end residential remodeling projects from project handoff through successful completion. You'll serve as the primary point of contact for clients and trade partners during construction, visiting jobsites daily to keep a pulse on progress, proactively identify issues, and ensure quality standards are being met.

You'll typically manage 3–4 active projects at a time, with project values averaging around $500K and larger projects reaching several million dollars. Your job is to keep projects moving, anticipate problems before they become bigger issues, and make sure clients and team members always know what comes next.

Essential Functions
  • Own Project Execution — Take responsibility for residential remodeling projects from construction kickoff through completion, ensuring quality, schedule, and client expectations stay aligned.
  • Master the Schedule — Build and maintain accurate project schedules, coordinate trades and material deliveries, anticipate bottlenecks, and keep projects moving forward.
  • Lead Client Communication — Serve as the primary client contact during construction and communicate proactively about progress, challenges, schedule changes, costs, and difficult decisions.
  • Coordinate & Lead the Field — Work closely with Assistant Project Managers, trade partners, vendors, designers, and internal teams while delegating effectively and holding people accountable.
  • Solve Problems — Identify construction challenges early, develop practical solutions, and confidently make decisions when unexpected issues arise.
  • Protect Quality, Budget & Documentation — Maintain high construction standards while managing purchase orders, change orders, materials, inspections, project documentation, and other details necessary to keep projects on time and within budget.
  • Maintain Systems — Keep Buildertrend and project documentation current while participating in team meetings, Scrum planning, and company processes.
  • Develop the Team — Provide leadership, coaching, and training to Assistant Project Managers and junior team members, helping them strengthen their construction knowledge, communication, and project management skills.

  • Communication Excellence: Fearless and proactive communicator who is comfortable delivering both good and difficult news to clients, vendors, and team members.
  • Leadership: Able to delegate effectively, hold others accountable, and lead projects without feeling the need to personally perform every field task.
  • Technical Skills: Comfortable using Buildertrend or similar construction project management software, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and shared company systems.
  • Education: Construction-related education is a plus, but demonstrated experience and capability matter more than a specific degree.
  • Technical Construction Skills: Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications, navigate permitting and inspections, verify quality in the field, and maintain company and OSHA safety standards.
  • Personal Attributes: Organized, accountable, intellectually curious, calm under pressure, collaborative, and open to learning new ways of doing things.
  • Additional Requirements: Valid driver's license and ability to pass an MVR background check.
Compensation
  • Competitive Salary: $100,000–$120,000+, based on experience
