Job description

Our client is a well-established, locally owned commercial flooring contractor serving the Kansas City area. The company has built its reputation on quality workmanship, integrity, and delivering projects accurately, safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Their work includes a variety of commercial flooring systems, including carpet tile, ceramic tile, LVT, sheet vinyl, broadloom carpet, sports flooring, and moisture mitigation.

They are looking for a motivated Project Engineer who wants to build a long-term career in commercial construction and gain hands-on experience across project management, estimating, and project financials.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys the details behind a successful construction project and wants exposure to the entire process—from estimating and preconstruction through installation, billing, and closeout.

Position Summary

The Project Engineer will work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, field personnel, vendors, and accounting to help coordinate commercial flooring projects from initial bid through completion.

This position requires someone who is highly organized, comfortable working with numbers, and able to understand both the construction and financial sides of a project.

The ideal candidate doesn't necessarily need to be an accountant or senior estimator, but should understand basic accounting principles, job costing, estimating, budgets, purchase orders, and how each impacts project profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management & Coordination

Assist Project Managers with the day-to-day coordination of commercial flooring projects.

Review project drawings, specifications, contracts, and scopes of work.

Track project schedules, milestones, material requirements, and installation dates.

Coordinate with general contractors, vendors, manufacturers, installers, and internal team members.

Prepare and track submittals, RFIs, change orders, and other project documentation.

Maintain organized and accurate project files.

Assist with project startup, progress tracking, and closeout.

Communicate project changes, schedule concerns, and potential issues to the Project Manager.

Help ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.

Assist Estimators with takeoffs, quantity verification, pricing, and bid preparation.

Review drawings and specifications to identify flooring types, quantities, and scope requirements.

Request and organize vendor and supplier pricing.

Assist with preparing proposals and bid documentation.

Help identify scope gaps, exclusions, and potential project risks.

Compare estimated quantities and costs against actual project performance.

Support project handoff from estimating to operations after award.

Accounting & Cost Control

Assist with project budgets and job cost tracking.

Review purchase orders, invoices, material costs, and subcontractor expenses for accuracy.

Understand estimated versus actual project costs and help identify variances.

Assist with change order pricing and documentation.

Support monthly billing and project financial reporting.

Coordinate with accounting to ensure project costs are properly coded and documented.

Help track committed costs, outstanding invoices, and project profitability.

Maintain accurate financial documentation throughout the life of the project.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.

Previous experience in construction, project coordination, estimating, accounting, or a related field is preferred.

Commercial flooring experience is a plus but not required for the right candidate.

Basic understanding of construction estimating and job costing.

Comfortable working with budgets, numbers, spreadsheets, and financial information.

Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, or willingness to learn.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility.

What Will Make You Successful

The right person for this role is someone who wants to understand how and why a project makes money, not simply complete administrative tasks.

You enjoy digging into the details, asking questions, solving problems, and understanding how estimating, purchasing, scheduling, field production, billing, and job costing all work together.

You don't need to know everything on day one. You do need to be curious, organized, comfortable with numbers, and interested in developing into a well-rounded construction professional.

Why This Opportunity?

This isn't a Project Engineer role where you'll spend your entire day pushing paperwork.

You'll have the opportunity to learn multiple sides of the commercial construction business and work directly with experienced Project Managers and Estimators. You'll gain exposure to estimating, project management, accounting, procurement, field operations, and project financials—giving you a strong foundation for future growth.

For someone who wants to eventually move into Project Management, Estimating, or another construction leadership role, this position provides an opportunity to learn how successful projects are managed from beginning to end.
