The role involves assessing and guiding research requests, querying clinical databases, ensuring data integrity and security, and collaborating with research teams.

The CTSC is a member of the national Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium, funded by the National Institutes of Health. "Translational" science implies translating research from laboratory and clinical trials, to adoption in health systems, through the cycle of "bench" to "bedside" to "community." The CTSC promotes the expansion of clinical research and the emergence of community voice in the direction and implementation of clinical research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct data mining from clinical databases and electronic health records (EHRs) using SQL and Business Intelligence tools.
  • Perform extraction, management, cleaning, linking, combining, and merging of datasets from multiple sources, including the delivery of datasets with de-identification procedures such as date-shifting and randomization.
  • Exploring EHR data for validity, reproducibility, and various levels of consistency.
  • Continuously explore evolving data resources to develop and extend an in-depth understanding of the clinical data contents and medical concepts.
  • Communicate extensively with faculty, staff, and students of the HSC to understand their study questions, support their research goals, and provide guidance for developing clear and actionable data requests consistent with available data resources. This includes translating specifications into precise implementation and adapting to what is found in the medical data.
  • Ensure compliance with complex regulatory frameworks including HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and IRB (Institutional Review Board) for privacy of patient data and ethical oversight of human subjects research.
  • Participate on institutional committees and data governance processes; exercise the highest standards for privacy, security, storage, and transmission of data.
  • Designs and develops scripts to automate tasks for departments and/or study teams.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

TERM APPOINTMENT; FUNDING AVAILABLE THROUGH 05/31/2026; CONTINUANCE BEYOND THAT DATE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF ADDITIONAL FUNDING. The CTSC has received continuous funding for over two decades.
