Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • Qualifications commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor.
  • A minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activities consistent with eligibility for appointment as a Full Professor.
  • Relevant administrative experience with proven abilities in leading collaborative teams to accomplish complex tasks on time and within budget.
  • A strong record of scholarly publications and sustained extramural research funding.
  • Service-oriented approach with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to motivate faculty, staff, and students toward shared departmental goals.

Position Overview

The Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering ( ECEN ) serves asthe academic leader and chief administrative officer of thedepartment. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Engineering,the Chair leads faculty and staff to advance the department’sresearch, teaching, ABET accreditation, and service missions. Keyresponsibilities include strategic budget management, facultyrecruitment and mentoring, curriculum advancement, and cultivationof corporate, donor, and alumni partnerships. The Chair fosters anenvironment of research excellence aligned with strategic collegeclusters while ensuring graduate competitiveness.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is apublic land-grant, high research activity university enrolling15,275 students. The College of Engineering, with approximately2,700 students, offers EAC ABET -accredited undergraduate programs,9 Master’s programs, and 6 Doctoral programs. The COE’s 5 coreresearch clusters are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity andResilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications, andComplex Systems and Networks. Minimum Requirements
  • Degree: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalentterminal degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, ora closely related discipline.
  • Academic Rank: Qualifications commensurate withappointment at the rank of Full Professor.
  • Experience: A minimum of six years of demonstratedexcellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activitiesconsistent with eligibility for appointment as a FullProfessor.
  • Administrative & Leadership Capabilities: Relevantadministrative experience, with proven abilities in leading,supporting, and unifying collaborative teams to accomplish complextasks on time and within budget.
  • Scholarly Record: A strong track record of scholarlypublications and sustained extramural research funding.
  • Interpersonal & Service Orientation: Aservice-oriented approach with exceptional interpersonal andcommunication skills to motivate and empower faculty, staff, andstudents toward shared departmental goals.

  • Research & Grant Management: A robust, activeresearch portfolio in an electrical or computer engineeringdiscipline, paired with demonstrated success in grant managementand extramural funding acquisition.
  • Curriculum Innovation: Experience in designing andimplementing innovative curricula that integrate learning,discovery, and student engagement.
  • Inclusive Excellence: A strong, demonstrated commitmentto advancing the academic and professional success of historicallyunderrepresented populations in engineering and fostering aninclusive departmental culture.

  • Licensure: A Professional Engineering (PE) License ispreferred, though not required.
