Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position

The Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering ( ECEN ) serves as the academic leader and chief administrative officer of the department. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Engineering, the Chair leads faculty and staff to advance the department’s research, teaching, ABET accreditation, and service missions. Key responsibilities include strategic budget management, faculty recruitment and mentoring, curriculum advancement, and cultivation of corporate, donor, and alumni partnerships. The Chair fosters an environment of research excellence aligned with strategic college clusters while ensuring graduate competitiveness.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is a public land-grant, high research activity university enrolling 15,275 students. The College of Engineering, with approximately 2,700 students, offers EAC ABET -accredited undergraduate programs, 9 Master’s programs, and 6 Doctoral programs. The COE’s 5 core research clusters are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications, and Complex Systems and Networks. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECEN)

is one of the largest departments in the College of Engineering, with approximately 500 students enrolled across four degree programs: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, B.S. in Computer Engineering, M.S. in Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. The department is supported by five permanent full-time professional staff and 21 full-time faculty members.

  • Degree: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Academic Rank: Qualifications commensurate with appointment at the rank of Full Professor.
  • Experience: A minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and scholarly activities consistent with eligibility for appointment as a Full Professor.
  • Administrative & Leadership Capabilities: Relevant administrative experience, with proven abilities in leading, supporting, and unifying collaborative teams to accomplish complex tasks on time and within budget.
  • Scholarly Record: A strong track record of scholarly publications and sustained extramural research funding.
  • Interpersonal & Service Orientation: A service-oriented approach with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to motivate and empower faculty, staff, and students toward shared departmental goals.

  • Program Growth & Strategic Partnerships: Demonstrated success in expanding engineering programs—particularly doctoral programming—and a proven track record of cultivating win-win partnerships across academia, industry, and community stakeholders.
  • Research & Grant Management: A robust, active research portfolio in an electrical or computer engineering discipline, paired with demonstrated success in grant management and extramural funding acquisition.
  • Curriculum Innovation: Experience in designing and implementing innovative curricula that integrate learning, discovery, and student engagement.
  • Inclusive Excellence: A strong, demonstrated commitment to advancing the academic and professional success of historically underrepresented populations in engineering and fostering an inclusive departmental culture.
  • Leadership & Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to motivating faculty, staff, and students toward shared institutional goals.
  • Licensure: A Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred, though not required.
