Tidewater Community College invites applications for a Part-Time Professional Tutor for Open-Door Program - Math. The role supports TRiO-funded services by tutoring in math and guiding students toward independent study using IT tools and study strategies.

Ideal candidates have at least 60 college credits with a B average in related subjects, strong communication, and the ability to adapt to varied learning styles. Flexible scheduling (evenings/weekends) is preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires at least 60 college credits with a B average or better in the content area.
• Strong written and oral communication and ability to work with diverse students.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods to different learning styles.
• Ability to work with staff, students, and faculty at a professional level.
• Proficiency in math concepts from developmental mathematics to pre-calculus, including trigonometry.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students in math and encourage a systemic approach to studying that promotes independent learning.
• Participate in professional development offerings and meet with the Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan support.
• Refer students to appropriate campus resources and maintain regular, accurate tutoring records.
• Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to seek academic support.
• Perform other duties consistent with the Professional Tutor role.

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Position Summary:

The Open-Door Program is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program that provides academic support to disadvantaged college students.

Provide individual and group tutoring in math, support using information technology applications and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

Functional Responsibilities:

Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses. Participate in professional development offerings. Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a "B" average or better in the content area or related subject area.
• The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
• Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
• Math tutors should be proficient in math concepts from developmental mathematics to pre-calculus, including trigonometry.

Additional Considerations:

• Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours, approximately 10-18 hours a week preferred.
