Job summary

Tidewater Community College is seeking a Professional Tutor for the Open-Door Program in Science. The role supports disadvantaged students with individual and group tutoring, integrating study strategies and IT tools to foster independent learning.

Candidate must have completed 60 credits with a B average, and demonstrate strong communication, diverse-student engagement, and research-lab knowledge. Part-time, with evening/weekend hours preferred.

Qualifications

• Must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with a B average or better in the content area or related subject area.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work with a diverse student population.
• Ability to adjust tutoring methods to meet learning styles.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty.
• Ability to apply effective study and learning strategies for student progress.
• Strong skills in research methods and general laboratory knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students in scientific disciplines as part of the Open-Door Program.
• Attend professional development offerings and collaborate with campus resources.
• Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan academic support.
• Refer students to campus resources as needed.
• Keep regular and accurate tutoring session records and encourage student participation.
• Perform other duties consistent with a Professional Tutor role.
