Job summary
Tidewater Community College seeks a Professional Tutor for the Open Door Program—Science at its Portsmouth campus. The role supports disadvantaged students, provides individual and group tutoring in science, and helps develop independent learning strategies.
Work is part-time (10–18 hours weekly) with a schedule Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., some evenings/weekends may be required. Training and professional development are provided.
Qualifications
- Must have completed at least 60 credits with a B average or better in the content area.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Ability to adjust tutoring methods to meet various learning styles.
- Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
- Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize progress.
- Applicants must have strong skills in research methods and general laboratory knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
- Participate in professional development offerings.
- Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
- Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College ( TCC ) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC . TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
Position Summary:
The Open-Door Program is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program that provides academic support to disadvantaged college students.
Provide individual and group tutoring in scientific subjects, support using information technology applications and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.
- Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses.
- Participate in professional development offerings.
- Meet with Academic Skills Advisor and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
- Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Candidates must have completed at least 60 credits of higher education with at least a “B” average or better in the content area or related subject area.
- The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

- Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours, approximately 10-18 hours a week preferred
- It is preferred that science tutors be proficient in a combination of Biology and Anatomy & Physiology. While knowledge of Chemistry, or Physics will also be considered.
