Job summary

Description Of Job

At CDOT, our Roadway Design Engineers are responsible for managing the entire design process, from scoping to advertisement, including preparing construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and project management. It may also include involvement with innovative contracting and delivery methods and providing technical oversight to ensure work complies with departmental policies, procedures, and design standards. Our employees are the CDOT engineer of record, and stamp plans with their professional engineer license in accordance with the State’s licensing regulations. The position provides ongoing design support during construction, coordinates with specialty units and external partners, performs conceptual design as needed, and conducts regular site visits and inspections to resolve field‑related design or construction issues. The position may assist in mentoring less experienced engineers and team members as well as assisting the Resident Engineer with special tasks such as developing workflows, determining areas to improve design consistency, etc.

As a CDOT employee, you represent the owner of the State’s transportation infrastructure and have the ability to identify safety concerns, changes in transportation needs, areas for improvement, and then determine a project’s criteria. The types of projects that you might work on will depend upon the geography, population density, traffic volume, and transportation needs. Projects can range in cost from $150,000 to $100 million. Periodically, we will have larger projects, such as the US 50b Interchange Improvements or
