Job summary

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in Pueblo is seeking a Professional Engineer licensed roadway design engineer. You will manage design from scoping through advertisement, prepare plans and estimates, and coordinate with partners while providing technical oversight and mentoring less experienced engineers.

You will work in a hybrid schedule, with in-office and field activity, travel across the Pueblo region, and a focus on safety, quality, and compliance with CDOT standards.

At CDOT, our Roadway Design Engineers are responsible for managing the entire design process, from scoping to advertisement, including preparing construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and project management. It may also include involvement with innovative contracting and delivery methods and providing technical oversight to ensure work complies with departmental policies, procedures, and design standards. Our employees are the CDOT engineer of record, and stamp plans with their professional engineer license in accordance with the State’s licensing regulations. The position provides ongoing design support during construction, coordinates with specialty units and external partners, performs conceptual design as needed, and conducts regular site visits and inspections to resolve field-related design or construction issues. The position may assist in mentoring less experienced engineers and team members as well as assisting the Resident Engineer with special tasks such as developing workflows, determining areas to improve design consistency, etc.

As a CDOT employee, you represent the owner of the State’s transportation infrastructure and have the ability to identify safety concerns, changes in transportation needs, areas for improvement, and then determine a project’s criteria. Our mission is to provide the best multi-modal transportation system for Colorado that most effectively and safely moves people, goods, and information.

The types of projects that you might work on will depend upon the geography, population density, traffic volume, and transportation needs. Projects can range in cost from $150,000 to $100 million. Periodically, we will have larger projects, such as the US 50b Interchange Improvements or the US 50 Passing Lane CM/CG projects.

• Smaller routine and emergency maintenance repairs, such as culvert issues, collapsing retainer walls, sink holes
• Roadway resurfacing projects, traffic improvements, signal replacements, utility coordination/relocations
• Reconstructing intersections, such as changing the configuration, adding a new leg, corridor widening, installing a roundabout, ensuring ADA compliance
• Bridge rehabilitation or replacement, fiber wrapping girders and columns, replacing bridge deck components
• New interchange and/or alignment construction
• Rockfall mitigation
• Integrate wildlife crossings and bike/pedestrian access into the transportation system

Delivering a successful transportation project requires coordination with a wide variety of groups. Our Project Engineers work with and provide expertise to CDOT specialty groups (e.g. utilities, right-of-way, survey, environmental, materials, traffic, geotechnical, planning), Federal Highway Administration, US Forest Service, US Geological Survey, Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife, Colorado Dept. of Public Health and Environment, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Motor Carriers Association, local government, elected officials, drainage basin controlling agencies, public utilities, railroads, businesses, consultants, contractors, local community groups, and so much more.

Work Environment:

• Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
• You will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work after training period.
• Average work week 40-50 hours
• Approximately 20% spent in the field, 80% spent in the office
• Travel required during work hours throughout the Pueblo and Region 2 area.
• Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
• Occasional attendance at night meetings
• Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic, in variable weather, and over variable terrain

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

• Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors
• OR Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from another state.
