State of Colorado's CDOT is seeking an Engineering Assistant II for the Sterling region. The incumbent will support the work unit supervisor in construction, preconstruction, and materials testing for transportation projects, including surveying, design review, and testing materials.

Role involves preparing reports, collecting field data, and ensuring compliance with plans. After training, a hybrid schedule with field and office work is possible, with travel across Colorado as required.

About the Work Unit

This position is in the Sterling Engineering Residency within CDOT’s Region 4 North Engineering Program. This unit prepares the plans, specifications and cost estimates for upgrading, reconstructing, and maintaining the highway infrastructure. They monitor, oversee, and supervise all aspects of highway construction contracts between CDOT and contractors to ensure conformance with the contract plans and specifications. Construction activities of the work unit include testing materials, inspecting for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, providing quality assurance and control, document pay quantities, authorizing contract payments, initiating and authorizing contract modification orders, and monitoring the financial status of projects. Ultimately, the unit is responsible for providing the best multimodal transportation for Colorado that most effectively moves people, goods and information safely.

About the Position

As the Engineering Assistant, you will assist with the supportive duties for the work unit supervisor in construction, preconstruction, and materials testing for transportation projects. This includes, but is not limited to, surveying, design review and support, testing of materials incorporated into projects, assuring compliance of plans and specifications, and determining the quantities for interim progress payments. You will also assist in the design of construction plans by gathering and checking project quantities and geometrics. You will also perform routine materials testing and inspection independently, including collecting test materials, conducting appropriate tests and analyses, and reporting all results obtained to the Project Engineer.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but is not limited to, the following

• Assist with the execution of physical tests on materials to be incorporated into a project to ensure they conform and comply with the plans and specifications.
• Gather and document results of physical tests and materials certification for incorporation into the project records.
• Enter all test results into ATSER and compile the summary report for the Project Engineer.
• Maintain accurate logs of all field tests, observations, and data entries to support project quality assurance.
• Communicate effectively with contractors and project staff regarding testing schedules, sampling requirements, and non-compliance issues.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory and field testing equipment, ensuring they are clean, organized, and ready for use.
• Assist with the visual inspections of contractor’s work, materials used, and methods employed by the contractor to confirm compliance with project plans and specifications.
• Assist with routine analysis to check applicability, accuracy, and reasonableness of data.
• Assist with collecting field measurements that will be used to generate pay quantities for Contractor’s work.
• May accept or reject installed work based on method statements provided by the contractor.
• Document daily construction activities in project diaries to ensure accurate records of work progression.
• Coordinate with traffic control personnel to ensure safety protocols are followed during inspection activities.
• Review contractor submittals for completeness and alignment with project requirements before passing to the engineer.
• Maintain field reports of daily progress, including weather conditions and equipment usage.
• Utilize computer software programs relevant to design and construction of projects, and for receiving and transmitting inter-departmental communications. Software includes, but is not limited to, the Microsoft Suite programs, Google applications, Adobe, Bluebeam Revu, and OpenRoads.
• Prepare, format, and organize digital project reports and documentation to ensure clarity and accessibility for project engineers and stakeholders.
• Perform routine data entry and validation within construction management software to maintain project records and track progress.
• Learn to review preliminary project design plans and documentation using appropriate manuals to ensure completeness, accuracy, and constructability of design.
• Obtain testing certifications to allow for the testing and inspection of soils, HMA, and concrete.
• Complete field surveys for compiling field data to be incorporated into the design of transportation facilities.
• Abide by all safety regulations, policies and procedures, and wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment

• Your schedule will be primarily Monday – Friday
• After a training period, you may work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work depending on the current workload
• Approximately 50% spent in the field, 50% spent in the office
• Work days/hours may change depending on the project
• Travel is required throughout the state for project meetings, field inspections and training
• Occasional overnight travel is required
• Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
• AND one year of full-time experience related to the duties of the position in construction, inspection, and/or documentation.

Substitution

• Completion of engineering, mathematics, or other relevant coursework from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
