The Product Safety Engineer will lead safety evaluations of electrical and electronic products, develop test programs and help customers resolve safety compliance issues. The role combines hands-on laboratory testing, design assessment, technical reporting and customer support from project scoping through completion.
Experience working in a testing and certification laboratory is preferred. An RF or wireless engineering background is a strong advantage.
·Review product designs, intended use and target markets to determine applicable safety requirements and identify potential electrical, thermal, mechanical and fire hazards.
·Evaluate schematics, insulation systems, protective circuits, critical components, materials and construction for compliance with applicable product safety requirements.
·Develop safety test plans covering operating conditions, sample requirements, accessories, abnormal operation and supporting documentation.
·Provide technical input for quotations, including scope, engineering effort, equipment needs, assumptions and retesting requirements.
·Perform and oversee safety tests such as dielectric strength, leakage or touch current, protective earth continuity, temperature rise and abnormal operation, as applicable.
·Assess creepage and clearance distances, accessibility of hazardous parts and safeguards against electric shock, overheating and fire.
·Investigate safety test failures, explain findings to customers, recommend corrective actions and evaluate modified products.
·Prepare and review safety reports, construction assessments and critical component lists for accuracy, completeness and traceability.
·Coordinate technical handoffs between customers, laboratory staff and certification personnel while respecting independent certification decisions.
·Identify technical blockers early, communicate their effect on scope and schedules, and drive issues to resolution.
·Maintain safe test practices, controlled procedures and appropriate equipment checks; mentor engineers and improve laboratory methods.
·Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant technical experience.
·Typically, three or more years of relevant product safety engineering experience testing against global standards, with demonstrated responsibility for independent technical evaluations.
·Experience working in a testing and certification laboratory, including hands‑on product safety testing, construction review and technical reporting.
·Hands‑on experience performing electrical safety testing including test planning, execution, evaluation of results and technical reporting.
·Strong understanding of electrical hazards, insulation, protective grounding, critical components and safety test instrumentation.
·Ability to interpret product safety standards for global markets and apply requirements to real product designs and test programs.
·Experience reviewing schematics, mechanical drawings, component specifications, bills of materials and supporting compliance documentation.
·Familiarity with laboratory quality systems, traceability, controlled procedures and ISO/IEC 17025 practices.
·Ability to manage several technical projects, make sound engineering judgments and document findings clearly.
·Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical issues and corrective actions to customers.
·RF or wireless engineering background, including experience with Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi, cellular, IoT or other radio technologies.
·Experience supporting RF testing or using instruments such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators or wireless communication testers.
·Familiarity with FCC or ISED workflows and the interaction between safety, RF and EMC requirements for connected products.
·Experience with safety evaluations of Information and Communication Technology equipment, laboratory instruments, industrial electronics, medical electrical equipment or battery‑powered products.
·Exposure to NRTL or CB Scheme projects, certification‑body requirements and ISO/IEC 17065 processes.
·Experience automating measurements or analyzing data using Python, LabVIEW or similar tools.
·Thorough safety evaluations and clear test plans that identify compliance issues early and reduce avoidable retesting.
·Timely resolution of safety findings, supported by sound engineering analysis and practical customer guidance.
·Accurate technical deliverables and reliable handoffs between testing and certification teams.
·Stronger engineering capability through mentoring, improved procedures and shared technical knowledge.
