Job summary

Toast is seeking an in-house counsel to advise cross-functional teams on regulatory compliance, privacy, IP, and consumer protection across the product lifecycle.

You will translate complex legal requirements into technical guidance for product, engineering, data science, and marketing teams, review architecture proposals, and monitor evolving AI regulations in the U.S. and globally. This role demands excellent communication and collaborative skills in a fast-paced tech environment.

Qualifications

• J.D. from ABA-accredited U.S. law school
• Bar admission in at least one state
• 5+ years of legal experience in regulatory compliance, privacy, IP, and consumer protection
• In-house legal experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on new products and features
• Technical fluency with architecture/design docs, data flows, schemas, APIs, and model behavior
• Experience with AI or ML issues including training data rights and governance
• Experience with data-use and data-rights questions including de-identification and contracts
• Experience in fast-paced technology or software companies
• Exceptional communication skills
• Collaborative, customer-service, growth mindset

Responsibilities

• Advise product, engineering, data, and marketing stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial development through launch
• Review marketing strategies and assets
• Provide practical legal advice on regulatory compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property, AI, marketing, and privacy
• Advise on core platform infrastructure, AI systems, platform and API design, integrations, and AI actions on customers' behalf
• Counsel product, engineering, and data science teams across the ML model lifecycle
• Advise on identity, authentication, authorization, account security, consent, delegated access, and access-control design
• Translate legal requirements into technical requirements and write guidance for engineers
• Review design documents, data models, and architecture proposals
• Monitor U.S. and international laws and regulations relating to the Toast platform and global AI developments
• Develop scalable processes including playbooks, intake triage, and decision trees
• Collaborate across privacy, security, compliance, and product counsel teams
