Job summary

Ministry of Justice is seeking Probation Officers to assess and manage risk posed by individuals on probation and supervised through community orders and licences. You will provide information to courts and collaborate with partner agencies to reduce reoffending.

Responsibilities include case assessment, reporting, and contributing to accredited programmes while upholding equality, safeguarding, and professional standards. English language proficiency is essential.

Qualifications

• Probation Officer qualification or currently qualified Probation Officer.
• PQF Honours Degree/Graduate Diploma and Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice, or Diploma in Probation Studies, or CQSW (Probation option).
• Knowledge of Criminal Justice System and Probation Service.
• A working knowledge of relevant legislation and National Standards.
• Knowledge of Evidence Based Practice and risk/needs assessment tools.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional advice and assessment, including written reports to courts, Parole Board, and partner organisations.
• Undertake offender management tasks with people on probation at all risk levels, including high and very high.
• Use computer based systems to maintain records within agreed timescales.
• Ensure timely referrals and relationships across offender management, court teams, victim contact units, interventions, and external agencies.
• Attend professional meetings and represent the PS at MAPPA/MARAC forums.
• Collaborate with colleagues and provide guidance to Probation Services Officers and staff.
• Provide cover within your team and to other teams as required.
• Carry out prison, home or other location visits as required.
• Deliver and co-lead accredited programmes commensurate with grade.
• Conduct mandatory alcohol and drug tests and follow medication procedures.
• Carry out safeguarding duties in line with PS responsibilities and policies.
• Demonstrate pro-social modelling and challenge anti-social behaviour.
• Work within the aims and values of PS and HMPPS.
