Primary Function of Position

The Systems Engineer plays a leadership role in defining the architecture of Intuitive Surgical’s flagship product, the daVinci Surgical System. They drive decisions on the architecture of the robotic system that enhances safety, performance, and customer satisfaction. The individual will collaborate with Product Management, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Clinical Safety Engineers to develop the architectural description and system-level requirements that advance the state of the art in fulfilling Intuitive Surgical's mission—making surgery easier for Patients and Caregivers.

The individual should possess deep technical expertise in one or more engineering areas and be capable of communicating complex trade-offs to executive leadership, focusing on the intersection of technology, engineering, and clinical performance of a robotic surgery system.

Essential Job Duties

This position has the responsibility and authority to:

• Maintain and develop a comprehensive understanding of user needs and business strategy.
• Stay informed about contemporary Mechanical Design, electrical connectivity, and computing technologies, and collaborate on product architectures that ensure performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Develop and maintain architectural requirements aligned with product and corporate strategies, including safety, features, interfaces, performance, cost, and integration. Drive interoperability requirements and interfaces—both internal and external.
• Contribute significantly to risk management by ensuring consistency between top-down risk documents and departmental risk assessments. Act as a safety advocate within the multiport business unit.
