Job summary

AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER seeks a senior engineer in Ohio to support the PCE Standards organization, focusing on communications for protection and control. The role provides technical guidance to Transmission teams and drives safe, efficient project execution.

The engineer will lead digital substation network standards development around IEC61850, PRP/STP architectures, and liaison with Telecommunication/IT groups to ensure secure, compliant solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's/Master's in ABET-accredited engineering program.
• PE license in US encouraged and preferred.
• 6+ years of related engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of digital substation network standards IEC61850.
• Develop and support redundancy architectures (PRP/STP) and network topologies.
• Support substation communication protocols including DNP, Modbus, and 61850.
• Perform network monitoring with Wireshark for GOOSE/SV/TCP/IP.
• Coordinate with Transmission Telecommunication and IT groups on standards and security.
