Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is currently seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to join a team responsible for International Design to Production Transition Programs with the Defense Sector team in the Plymouth, MN offices.

Please note this position may be filled as a Principal (Level 3) or Sr Principal (Level 4) depending on the candidate’s education and/or years of experience.

Location: This position requires on-site support. Selected candidate will need to be within commuting distance to our site in Plymouth, MN.

Our engineers work in a high exposure, fast-paced, and exciting environment that involves hands-on technical challenges, problem solving, and inter-department collaborations. The candidate shall also apply strong engineering fundamentals, demonstrate clear communication, and must be able to support up to 40% domestic and international travel for the duration of the program.

Position Description:

  • Position reports to MCA co-production manager and works with adjacent engineering groups.

  • Works with design team to ensure design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) are addressed.

  • Communicating issues and status frequently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Works closely with the existing systems engineering and QMS processes to ensure proper rigor and technical acumen is applied throughout the engineering lifecycle.

  • Presents work products at program reviews, proposals, or other project meetings.

  • Acts as a technical interface to external customers, and forms working relationships with representatives of external technical organizations.

  • Supports manufacturing trade studies and early supplier involvement.

  • Will involve sometimes stepping into other roles when needed.

  • Travel up to 40% domestically and internationally to customers and suppliers.

Responsibilities include:

  • Communicating issues and status frequently and effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Technical understanding of mechanical systems and manufacturing processes.

  • Accountable for the successful completion of Design to Production Transition engineering projects.

  • Requires extensive regular contact with assigned project customers, both internal and external.

  • Participating in customer meetings and resolving engineering and management project issues.

  • Design or update manufacturing and assembly process documents.

  • Read, understand, and modify equipment/machinery and product drawings and specifications, in both production and testing environments.

  • Generate and maintain lists of open issues and diligently track them to resolution.

  • Perform failure analysis of physical and functional test results when results do not meet requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have 9 years of experience in manufacturing and production of mechanical components and/or systems (Principal Manufacturing Engineer).

  • Will consider bachelor’s degree in engineering plus 5 or more years of experience, or master’s degree and 3 years’ experience.

  • Must have 13 years of experience in manufacturing and production of mechanical components and/or systems (Sr. Principal Manufacturing Engineer).

  • Will consider bachelor’s degree in engineering plus 9 or more years of experience, master’s degree and 7 years’ experience, or PhD plus 4 years of experience.

  • 2+ years of experience with metal component design and manufacturing OR 2+ years of experience in automated assembly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering or related STEM area.

  • 10 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Familiarity with Design of Equipment, Tooling, Process Development and Manufacturing Process.

  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Fluency in MS Office software applications.

Salary Range: $93,000 - $139,600

Salary Range 2: $115,400 - $173,200

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
