Job summary

athenahealth in Boston, MA is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead one or more engineering teams. You will guide the design, development, and delivery of high‑quality software for medication management, reporting to the Director of Engineering, in a hybrid setup.

You will mentor engineers, own technical designs, and drive cross‑team collaboration while leveraging AI‑assist tooling to improve throughput and quality. Strong expertise in React, GraphQL, and modern web tech is required.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience and strong product development background.
• Proven experience leading full‑stack development teams with mentoring and design oversight.
• Proficiency in React, modern frontend architecture, and core web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Java).
• Experience with generative AI and AI‑assist tooling for software engineering.
• Solid experience with relational databases and data modeling.
• Experience with distributed architectures (monoliths, microservices).
• GraphQL experience is highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and delivery of high‑quality code within an agile cross‑functional team.
• Own and author clear, detailed technical designs aligned with architectural standards and business objectives.
• Propose scalable, maintainable solutions and provide reliable estimates for development efforts.
• Write clean, well‑tested, performant code adhering to coding standards and best practices.
• Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback to uphold engineering excellence.
• Develop deep knowledge of the medication management domain as a technical SME.
• Take ownership of deliverables and coordinate cross‑team efforts for successful execution.
• Regularly leverage AI‑assisted tooling to increase throughput, effectiveness and quality.
• Drive adoption and best practices within your sphere of influence.
• Evaluate and propose opportunities for generative AI to delight customers.
