Job summary

athenahealth is hiring a Senior Software Engineer in the Specialties Zone, Boston-based hybrid. You’ll design, build, test, deploy, and support scalable software powering specialty clinical workflows.

As a full‑stack engineer, you’ll own features end‑to‑end across frontend, backend, APIs, data, and cloud infrastructure, collaborating with product, design, and other engineers. You will work with AI-assisted tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex to accelerate development while maintaining

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of software engineering experience in a product development organization.
• Strong full-stack development experience, including backend services, frontend applications, APIs, data persistence, and production support.
• Solid backend experience using Java or modern OOP languages.
• Hands-on experience with JavaScript, React, HTML, CSS, and modern frontend architecture.
• Experience with Perl and/or Python in production environments.
• Experience designing, building, and supporting APIs using REST and GraphQL.
• Experience with relational databases, data modeling, Oracle and PostgreSQL.
• Experience with distributed systems and evolving architectures (monolithic, microservices, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support high-quality software as part of an agile, cross-functional product team.
• Work as a full-stack engineer across frontend, backend, APIs, data, and cloud infrastructure.
• Own features across the entire software development lifecycle, including requirements refinement, technical design, implementation, automated testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Develop knowledge of specialty clinical workflows to improve technical decision-making and cross-team coordination.
• Contribute to and evolve team practices, including design reviews, agile ceremonies, code review standards, and testing strategy.
• Use Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, and similar AI-assisted tools throughout the lifecycle, including code generation, testing, and documentation.
• Mentor other engineers on engineering practices and responsible use of AI tools.
• Build and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests; explore AI-assisted testing approaches.
• Explore GraphQL to extend product capabilities; monitor app health and performance.
