Job summary

JPMorganChase seeks a Principal Engineer for Developer Platform Engineering to own technical strategy across a portfolio of 1,000+ services and lead a 1,000-engineer org. You will drive performance-first, resilient engineering through tooling, guardrails, and self-service platforms.

Role focuses on capacity modeling, automated assessment, SLOs, observability, and AI-enabled development workflows with secure governance. Strong leadership and collaboration across teams are essential.

Qualifications

• 15+ years of engineering experience; 8+ years in performance engineering, capacity planning, or developer platform engineering for high-traffic distributed systems.
• Experience scaling engineering practices across large organizations via self-service platforms, maturity models, and adoption playbooks.
• Hands-on software engineering with Java and Spring Boot; strong React familiarity; server-side rendering.
• Expertise in workload modeling, latency/throughput analysis, and translating goals into measurable service-level outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Define and own a portfolio-wide capacity evaluation methodology to answer “can we handle 10x?” through modeling and automated assessment.
• Build a developer platform by delivering paved roads, self-service tooling, and templated performance test harnesses.
• Set technical direction for performance, capacity, and resiliency standards, including SLOs and failure budgets.
• Design automated performance evaluation pipelines (load, stress, capacity, soak) in CI/CD with regression detection.
• Establish frontend performance standards for backend-for-frontend and React apps, including Core Web Vitals and latency breakdowns.
• Lead resiliency/chaos engineering to validate autoscaling and graceful degradation under extreme load.
• Build observability-driven capacity intelligence via production telemetry and synthetic monitoring.
• Coach teams on performance-first design and inner-sourced frameworks.
• Architect and govern AI-enabled engineering workflows with guardrails for security and reuse.
