Job summary

Valar Atomics seeks a Principal Nuclear I&C Engineer to own the reactor measurement architecture for our high-temperature gas-cooled reactor program. You will define instrumentation strategy, supervise safety-critical sensor designs, and lead engineering through licensing and design reviews.

This role requires 10+ years in nuclear instrumentation and a relevant engineering degree, plus deep authority in detector physics or qualification, and experience representing engineering to regulators

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nuclear, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering required.
• 10+ years of experience in nuclear instrumentation or reactor I&C including significant applications.
• Ownership of instrumentation scope across programs with qualification and deployment experience.
• Architecture-level technical leadership demonstrated through measurable design bases or standards.
• Technical authority in at least one deep area of the domain (e.g., detector physics, signal chains, or qualification).
• Hands-on command of detector physics, channel design, and nuclear I&C standards (IEEE 603, 497, IEC 61513).
• Experience with formal approval or independent-review over safety-related instrumentation designs and qualification bases.
• Experience directing and developing other engineers and reviewing their work as a formal checker or design authority.
• Experience representing an engineering discipline to regulators, licensing bodies, standards organizations, or major vendors.

Responsibilities

• Define reactor measurement architecture across the program and protection system sensor architecture.
• Own instrumentation application strategy, qualification, and standardization across the plant.
• Lead safety-related instrumentation design approvals and licensing-related reviews.
• Build the discipline's capabilities by shaping roles, hiring standards, and technical interviews.
• Advise leadership on risk, resourcing, and scheduling for measurement integrity and reactor safety.
