Cloudflare in Austin, TX is seeking a Principal Engineer to set technical direction for Enterprise Applications and drive reliable, incremental delivery. You will design systems, lead cross-team initiatives, and stay hands-on where your impact is greatest.

This role navigates ambiguity, aligns engineering and business stakeholders, and models responsible AI-driven engineering with strong judgment and attention to detail.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language.
• Experience with LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.).
• Experience with AI guardrails/governance best practices.
• Experience delivering AI-enabled systems with measurable outcomes.
• Experience influencing technical culture without authority.
• Familiarity with integration patterns and API security.
• Experience with observability tooling and cloud-native environments.
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

• Establish technical strategy across Enterprise Applications and translate to plans.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives from problem definition to deployment.
• Influence decisions through design reviews, mentoring, and hands-on work.
• Build AI-enabled systems, agents, and workflow automation.
• Evaluate when AI is appropriate versus deterministic software.
• Establish practices for assessing AI systems for quality and security.
• Improve engineering effectiveness with reusable platforms and tooling.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to turn ambiguous problems into technical strategy.
