Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to set the technical direction for embedded software across platforms and vehicle software.

This role requires leading architecture across domains, advising senior leadership, and building durable platforms, standards, and operating models.

The position is remote, with in-person reporting up to three times weekly for GM hubs; some travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
• Typically 15+ years of experience developing, integrating, deploying, or validating software systems, including architecture leadership.
• Deep understanding of embedded and real-time software architecture and safety-critical product delivery.
• Demonstrated enterprise or multi-organization technical influence and cross-functional alignment.
• Ability to communicate complex tradeoffs to technical and executive audiences.
• Experience with production engineering platforms, software delivery systems, or engineering productivity capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Define the future-state architecture and multi-year roadmap for the assigned domain and its interfaces.
• Establish principles, standards, governance, and decision rights across teams and delivery organizations.
• Lead cross-domain technical risk resolution spanning architecture, quality, security, and cost.
• Advise leadership on investment choices, platform health, and enterprise value tradeoffs.
• Convene architecture reviews and technical communities for durable alignment across functions.
• Sponsor platform capabilities, automation, data models, and self-service experiences at scale.
• Define success measures and ensure evidence-based prioritization of improvements.
• Mentor staff- and principal-level engineers and strengthen technical leadership pipeline.
• Represent GM’s technical direction with internal and external partners with safety and quality at the core.
