Job summary

Hims & Hers is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to set the technical direction for data across healthcare platforms. You will own the large-scale data platform architecture, spanning ingestion, streaming, and serving for millions of patients.

You’ll work with GCP BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, Databricks, and Terraform, guiding cross-team data contracts, governance, and cost frameworks while staying hands-on with production code.

Qualifications

• 15+ years building and owning data platform architecture.
• Evidence you’ve set technical direction for organizations you didn’t manage.
• Experience defining edges of architectural authority across teams.
• Deep GCP and BigQuery expertise; operational fluency in AWS (Airflow on EKS).
• Modern data stack at platform scale: dbt, Airflow, Kafka, Databricks, and reverse ETL tools.
• Event streaming in production at scale; data contracts and governance.
• Data governance and compliance in regulated environments (HIPAA/PHI, GDPR).

Responsibilities

• Own multi-year platform architecture for ingestion, streaming, orchestration, transformation, and serving.
• Decide streaming paths from analytics to production and model evaluation.
• Define interfaces and data contracts between organizations and ensure boundaries.
• Define trust, quality, and freshness guarantees for datasets.
• Shape platform cost model and governance; ownership of cost accountability.
• Lead self-service strategies to empower Analytics Engineering and Data Science.
• Set standards for testing, CI/CD, observability, and IaC across teams.
• Chair Architecture Review and guide cross-team, multi-system decisions.
