Job summary

PermitFlow is hiring a Staff/Principal Engineer to build the core AI Assistant, infrastructure, and workflow agents. You will blend UX with deep technical work to deliver high-quality agents in a complex domain, while elevating the agentic infrastructure and data flywheel.

The role reports to the VP of Engineering and is open at Staff or Principal level based on experience. NYC-based candidates or those willing to relocate are preferred.

Qualifications

• Shipped an assistant or agentic product at meaningful scale.
• Deep, current knowledge of the agentic stack (tool calling and tool design, context engineering, memory, retrieval, orchestration patterns).
• Built eval harnesses that changed team priorities and can explain why they’re trustworthy.
• Strong software engineer with production experience and maintainable code.

Responsibilities

• Own the agent architecture, including reasoning loop, planning, and recovery for long-running tasks.
• Build context layer for documents, jurisdictional requirements, prior submissions, and client conventions.
• Design the tools and permissions surface for the assistant actions.
• Develop offline and online eval harnesses to measure task completion and failure modes.
• Set engineering standards and SDK abstractions for future agentic features.
• Collaborate with customers by shadowing permit coordinators and builders to improve system design.
