Job summary

PermitFlow is hiring a Principal Engineer to own the evolution of our architecture and platform, working across infrastructure, shared services, and product code. You’ll lead migrations and set standards that scale with the business while supporting agent-first development and rapid growth across the organization.

The ideal candidate has deep code architecture experience, can operate across the stack, and will report to the VP of Engineering. Hybrid NYC office schedule is preferred for this role.

Qualifications

• Owned the architecture of a large, multi-team codebase.
• Led migrations that changed how a whole org works.
• Strong platform and infrastructure depth: cloud infrastructure, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, observability.
• You work across the stack as a product engineer, from data model to UI.
• Currently working agent-first; code shipped by AI agents and you have opinions on fixes.
• Knowledge of the agentic stack: context engineering, agent instructions and skills, MCP, sandboxed execution.
• Earned authority through demonstrated judgment, working code, and clear writing.
• 15+ years of software engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture of our codebase: set patterns, module boundaries, and domain abstractions across the monorepo.
• Design the monorepo for agents: structure packages, ownership, build graph, conventions.
• Build the platform substrate: shared services, infrastructure, data access, environments, observability.
• Own the agentic SDLC: define ticket to production flow when agents do writing/testing/reviewing.
• Scale verification with volume: AI-assisted code review, test generation, CI gates.
• Put agents to work in the background: triage tests, migrations, incidents, and fixes.
