Job summary

PermitFlow is hiring a Staff/Principal Engineer to build our core AI Assistant, infrastructure, and workflow agents. You will work on an AI-driven product at scale, delivering high-quality agents in a complex domain and uplifting our agentic data flywheel.

The role reports to the VP of Engineering, with Staff or Principal level based on experience. You will ship quickly, instrument everything, and stay close to users to improve the system.

Qualifications

• Shipped an assistant or agentic product at meaningful scale.
• Deep knowledge of the agentic stack (tool calling, context engineering, memory, retrieval, orchestration).
• Built eval harnesses that changed what a team worked on.
• Strong software engineer with production-ready code.

Responsibilities

• Own the agent architecture: reasoning loop, planning, decomposition, state/session, recovery for long-running tasks.
• Build the context layer: retrieval, memory, context-window management over documents and jurisdictional requirements.
• Design the action surface: tools, permissions, and human-in-the-loop checks for costly actions.
• Make evaluation the engine of progress: offline/online eval, iteration to improve agent quality.
• Set the bar for the org: abstractions, SDKs, and review standards for agentic features.
• Stay close to the customer: observe real-world failures and feed insights back into design.
