Job Responsibilities

This position functions as a Principal Admitting Worker (PAW) for Transfer Center activities and as a Patient Placement Coordinator for Patient Placement activities under the Transfer Center and Patient Placement Supervisor.

• Screen all incoming patient transfers to UCSF Medical Center, process transfer requests, admissions, and admission reconciliation for units.
• Confirm insurance eligibility and benefits, follow up on inpatient authorization, and secure authorizations.
• Counsel patients and families regarding their financial liability, secure deposits on self‑pay admissions, and collect patient liability portions for routine/elective admissions.
• Perform Transfer Center intake, registration information, and financial clearance.
• Manage patient class updates and assist with time‑sensitive issues related to patient flow requiring “Grand Central” knowledge and expertise in admission, transfer, and discharge systems.
• Serve as first point of contact for incoming requests for patient transfer and direct admits to UCSF Medical Center.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma with six years of related experience, or associate’s degree with four years of related experience.
• Proficiency in health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements.
• Proficiency in reimbursement financial policies.
• ADT experience required, knowledge of office machines, typing 30 wpm.
• Basic PC skills.
• Problem‑solving, data analysis, and recommendation skills.
• Ability to multitask, prioritize, and follow instructions in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong customer‑service skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and grammar.
• Ability to work collaboratively with culturally diverse staff and patient/family populations.
• Independent work with minimal supervision.
• Will be working in San Francisco, CA.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bilingual capability.
• Previous hospital experience.
• Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of government program regulations such as MediCal, Medicare, MIA, CCS, and other third‑party payors.
