Press Operator
Assist the First Press Operator in the operation and maintenance of the assigned press.
Job Duties:
- Read instructions from the job ticket, including type of stock, amount of paper, size, weight, caliper, type of ink and colors, and all special instructions.
- Bring stock and ink to the press, ensuring all paper is accounted for and ink is the correct color/type.
- Review job tickets before starting and identify all variables to ensure 100% accuracy during run.
- Prepare waste sets/books for make-ready pulls.
- Set up the feeder, side guide, double sheet detector in-feed and delivery, including slow-down wheels.
- Position the image on the sheet according to the provided layout.
- Register colors and check alignment, imposition/pagination, trims, bleeds, folds, and image squareness.
- Provide laminated samples for color and peel tests and record in the job book.
- Obtain supervisor approval for all jobs.
- Use mylar templates and magnetic strips for specific jobs, and check for shear marks on hydraulic lamination jobs.
- Feed paper during the press run and operate the continuous feeder efficiently.
- Ensure press operates smoothly without trip-offs to meet estimates.
- Maintain ink fountain and chemical supplies, checking pH and conductivity.
- Monitor ink and chemical levels to prevent shortages.
- Inspect printed sheets with the First Press Operator during the run for quality assurance.
- Timestamp and review quality pulls at each interval.
- Clean the press during changeovers and at shift end, including cylinders, blades, wash-up pans, ink knives, and gum plates.
- Meet wash-up time estimates for smooth shift transitions.
- Follow all safety policies, including MSDS, Lockout/Tagout, and proper chemical handling/disposal.
- Perform preventative maintenance such as lubrication, small part replacements, cleaning, and adjustments.
- Clean the work area before the next shift.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Good color perception and pass color hue and vision tests.
- 1-2 years of experience as a Feeder or Floor Help, with exposure to sheet-fed presses.
- Experience with color scanning equipment and working with plastic substrates.
- Ability to read and interpret safety and operating instructions.
- Basic computer skills and arithmetic ability.
- Ability to read a ruler and operate densitometers, spectrophotometers, gloss meters, pH/conductivity meters, and other printing equipment.
- Ability to work around UV materials and register 6/c work with spot coatings.
- Competencies: accuracy, reliability, decision-making, time management, self-motivation.
- Good attendance and willingness to work overtime during busy periods.
- Dependable and able to perform all essential functions with or without accommodation.
Work Schedule and Compensation:
6PM-6AM, 12-hour continental shifts, 3-4 days a week (Monday-Wednesday, then Thursday-Saturday, with overtime on Sunday). Salary: $28-$32/hr DOE. Long-term position.
