Job summary

Save the Children in Louisiana seeks an Assistant Teacher to support preschoolers in Head Start classrooms, assisting the Teacher with daily activities and ensuring a safe, nurturing learning environment.

You will partner with families, help implement developmentally appropriate lesson plans, and participate in conferences to discuss progress. Qualifications include a CDA-equivalent and English proficiency; the role requires teamwork and commitment to safeguarding children.

Qualifications

• Must have CDA or state CDA-equivalent or be enrolled in a CDA program within two years of hire.
• Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Head Start/Early Head Start program.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and collaborate with families and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to keep all information on families confidential.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and online client management systems.
• Participation in professional development including basic first aid and pediatric CPR as required by state licensing and HSPPS.

Responsibilities

• Engage with children during activities; supervise indoors and outdoors to maintain a safe environment.
• Assist in planning and conducting activities with Head Start Teacher to meet individual needs.
• Guide classroom projects and field trips with the Head Start Teacher.
• Maintain classroom management using developmentally appropriate techniques.
• Provide a safe and developmentally appropriate learning environment; interact with children individually and in groups.
• Build relationships within the organization, children and families.
• Ensure child safety with active supervision; no child left unsupervised.
• Collaborate with management to align with Head Start Program Performance Standards.
• Serve as liaison between staff and parents, encouraging classroom involvement and home activities.
• Participate in parent-teacher conferences to discuss development and progress.
• Eat with and assist children during meals to teach social and self-help skills.
• Assist children in health and personal habits (rest, brushing teeth, etc.).
• Assist Head Start Teacher in record keeping; observe, assess and screen as needed.
• Participate in staff meetings, committees and training.
• Assist in documenting in-kind activities and donations.
• Stay flexible to stay until children leave; follow supervisor PD plans.
• Will lead in absence of a teacher.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
