Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, seeks a clinical RN II to join the Ambulatory Surgery Center Preop team. The role emphasizes safe, high‑quality preoperative care in a fast-paced environment.

You will perform preop assessments, IV access, meds, and patient education, coordinate with anesthesia and surgeons, and support discharge planning. A DC RN license and 2 years acute care experience are required.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in nursing required.
• DC RN license active at time of application.
• Minimum two years of acute care RN experience.
• BLS and ACLS certifications required.
• IV initiation and vascular access competency.

Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive preoperative assessments, including airway, cardiovascular status, allergies, medications, NPO, pregnancy risk and comorbidities.
• Identify high‑risk findings and escalate to anesthesia and surgical teams.
• Initiate IV access and obtain laboratory specimens as ordered; administer preop meds.
• Verify consents and ensure patient readiness for timely procedure start.
• Provide preoperative education and discharge planning information.
• Maintain infection prevention and medication safety; document in EMR.
• Collaborate with anesthesia, surgeons, OR staff; may serve as charge nurse.
• Participate in quality improvement and regulatory readiness initiatives.
