Job summary

Howard University Hospital is seeking a Clinical Nurse II for the 5 North Surgery/Trauma unit. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered care to adults with acute medical conditions and postoperative/trauma needs.

The role emphasizes evidence-based nursing, central venous access, pain management, education, and care coordination, with opportunities for leadership as charge nurse and involvement in performance improvements.

Qualifications

• Nursing degree from an accredited school required; BSN preferred.
• Two (2) or more years of clinical nursing experience on hire or after completing HUH’s PNCAP with 18 months on staff.
• Current, active RN license in the District of Columbia.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association required.
• Knowledge of nursing theory and practice to evaluate patient care; familiarity with medical equipment.
• Competency in medical-surgical nursing assessment.
• Ability to work under stress, prioritize tasks, respond to emergencies, and communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate patient care at the bedside.
• Deliver evidence-based nursing care to a diverse adult patient population including post-surgical and trauma patients.
• Perform comprehensive assessments including pain and symptom evaluation.
• Manage central venous access and perform sterile dressing changes and blood draws.
• Administer medications and IV therapies safely; monitor for adverse effects.
