Job summary

Mass General Brigham is seeking a Preoperative Evaluation Registered Nurse to conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments and educate patients preparing for surgery. This role involves coordinating with anesthesia, surgery, and support services to ensure optimal patient readiness and safety.

You will document findings in the EMR, educate patients on perioperative expectations, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to uphold standards of care across the surgical pathway.

Qualifications

• RN license in good standing.
• BSN preferred for this role.
• PACU/PreOP experience required.
• Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking.
• Excellent communication and patient education skills.
• Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and documentation.
• Adheres to CARE standards.
• Ability to work under pressure and coordinate with interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Perform thorough preoperative nursing assessments, including medical history review, medication reconciliation, allergy verification, and evaluation of comorbid conditions.
• Review and ensure completion of all required preoperative testing (labs, imaging, EKGs, consults) per guidelines.
• Identify potential risk factors and collaborate with anesthesia, surgery, and other providers to optimize readiness.
• Provide clear, comprehensive patient education regarding preoperative instructions, medication management, NPO guidelines, and perioperative expectations.
• Document all assessments, interventions, and communications in the EMR.
• Communicate with surgeons’ offices, anesthesia teams, and other departments to clarify orders and missing documentation.
• Triage and respond to patient inquiries related to preoperative preparation and follow-up as needed.
• Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance and policy adherence.
• Support patient safety initiatives including infection prevention and accurate patient identification.
• Maintain current knowledge of clinical best practices and perioperative guidelines.
