Job summary

USPI TOPS Specialty Surgical Hospital in Houston seeks a Per-Diem Pre-Admissions Testing (PAT) Nurse to join our team full-time. This role ensures patients are prepared for procedures by reviewing histories and coordinating necessary clearances with surgeons and anesthesia teams.

You will educate patients on pre-surgery instructions, fasting, medication management, and arrival logistics while ensuring complete documentation and safe pathways to the OR.

Qualifications

• RN license required and current.
• Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
• BLS certification required.
• Minimum 1 year of pre-op, PACU, or pre-admissions experience.
• Familiarity with EMR systems and surgical workflows.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• High attention to detail and organization.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
• Compassionate and professional patient interaction.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-operative assessments via phone or in person, reviewing medical histories and identifying any potential anesthesia or surgical risks.
• Coordinate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and primary care providers to obtain necessary clearances and lab work.
• Educate patients on pre-surgery instructions, including fasting, medication management, and arrival logistics.
• Ensure all required documentation is complete prior to the scheduled procedure.
• Identify and escalate any health concerns that may affect surgical clearance.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough charting in the EMR system.
• Support patient safety, satisfaction, and readiness through proactive communication and education.
