Job summary

Optum, a member of UnitedHealth Group, seeks a Practice Support Assistant in our Pediatrics department to manage scheduling, patient outreach and data handling while delivering excellent customer service. This role supports the medical team and aids in onboarding and training of staff.

The position emphasizes accurate data collection, coordination of check‑in/out, and handling forms, referrals, and authorizations to ensure smooth patient experiences.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least 1 year of healthcare experience or experience in a medical office setting.
  • Strong computer and data entry skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model and mentor for support staff; assist with onboarding and training
  • Manage complex scheduling tasks, including appointment booking and patient outreach
  • Ensure accurate data collection and reporting, handle follow‑up activities and referral tracking
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, resolving escalated issues and supporting patient satisfaction
  • Oversee waiting room operations, verify patient information, and assist with check‑in/check‑out processes
  • Complete and process forms, prior authorizations, prescription renewals, and other documentation
  • Collaborate with supervisors on coverage and workflow; lead huddles as needed
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and special projects

Positions in this function perform advancedPractice Support Assistantduties with a high level of autonomy and competency. Serves as a key member of the medical team, delivering excellent customer service and supporting strong patient‑clinician relationships. In addition to core responsibilities, handles administrative tasks, which vary by department.

Schedule: Monday (8am-4pm), Tuesday (8am-6pm), Wednesday (8am-4pm), Thursday (8am-4pm), Friday (9:30am-6pm). Schedule may be subject to change depending on business need.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 1+ years of healthcare experience or experience in a medical office setting
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pediatric experience
  • Proven solid technical proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with scheduling software and electronic medical records systems (Epic or equivalent)
  • Proven solid problem solving and complex patient management skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $16 - $29 per hour based on full‑time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
