Job summary

The Southwestern Public Service Company Area Engineering Intern at Xcel Energy will work alongside experienced engineers to support reliability, safety, and operation of the electric distribution system. You will gain hands-on experience with power system analysis and capital improvement projects.

As a current Electrical Engineering student, you will participate in field visits to substations and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Current student, Sophomore or higher.
• Enrolled in ABET-accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) and part-time during the school year (up to 20 hours/week) and commuting to the designated work location, per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

• Support electric distribution reliability and outage investigations, including CEMI/DEMI analysis.
• Assist with protection and coordination studies for distribution feeders and equipment.
• Support capital project development and distribution system improvement initiatives.
• Participate in field visits to substations, distribution facilities, and construction projects.
• Utilize utility engineering software and databases to evaluate system performance and operating conditions.
• Collaborate with engineers and technical staff to solve real-world electric utility challenges.
