Job summary

American Electric Power is seeking an entry-level Power Plant Operator in Lawton, OK. Under supervision, perform semi-skilled manual work and learn to assist equipment operators in running plant operations.

You will isolate, inspect, maintain and service plant equipment, monitor water chemistry, and support boiler and auxiliary systems while training for higher responsibilities. Rotating shifts, weekend/holiday availability required.

Qualifications

• Two year Associate degree in power plant technology, industrial technology, engineering technology or equivalent.
• Equivalent would include: Associates degree in another discipline and two years of related work experience, OR high school diploma with four years of related work experience.
• Must complete online pre-employment assessment and achieve a “recommended” result; possess a valid State driver's license; able to advance to Equipment Operator after training.

Responsibilities

• Assist equipment operators while learning the following job duties.
• Isolate, clean, open, replace, inspect, close and return to service plant equipment; place/remove clearance tags in the plant and switchyard.
• Operate, regulate, adjust, clean and minor maintain plant auxiliary systems; monitor equipment and report abnormal conditions.
• Operate, clean, service and lubricate portable tools; maintain tools and work areas; conduct tests with meters and analyzers.
• Erect and remove simple scaffolding and rigging.
• Perform routine cleaning of plant areas and equipment, including outside areas.
• Load, unload, move and handle materials and equipment using material handling tools.
• Monitor water chemistry and follow EPA guidelines.
• Assist in preparing boilers for operation and monitor coal feed and fires; hand lance slag etc.
• Use flow diagrams to identify piping and equipment and prepare reports.
• Perform duties per safety rules and participate in firefighting and emergency response programs.
