Job description

Overview

The Power Plant Mechanic is responsible for all phases of steam generation and maintenance of boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment. Responsibilities include monitoring power plant equipment; reading and interpreting control circuits, schematics, diagrams, blueprints, and specifications to ensure proper operation. The individual tests, maintains, and repairs power plant equipment while overseeing contractor work to ensure quality and code compliance.

Required certifications include Refrig Recovery Cert Type II or Universal certification; Type III preferred. A valid Driver's License is necessary. Most facilities require a Backflow Prevention Device tester's license. For positions at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, a Power Plant Operating Engineer 3rd Class or Third Class Stationary Engineer certification by the District of Columbia is preferred.

Education

• High School diploma or Trade school certification

Certification/Licensure

• Valid Driver's License for VA or NC, in good standing
• Refrig and Recovery Certification I or II

Experience

• Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
• Valid licensure for Vehicle operation in VA or NC, with a clean record
• Previous experience in commercial settings or medical facilities preferred
• On-site work at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
• Availability to work call shifts and rotating weekends as mission essential personnel
