Job summary

Xcel Energy offers an internship for electrical engineering students to gain hands-on experience with protection engineers, system studies, data collection, and understanding how the transmission grid operates and protects it. This position starts May 24, 2027 and may extend beyond the initial term based on performance.

Current students pursuing a BS in Electrical Engineering in ABET-accredited programs are encouraged to apply; full-time in summer or part-time during the school year with

Qualifications

Current student, Sophomore or higher.
Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering (B.S.).
Able to work full-time during summer (up to 40 hours/week) or part-time during the school year and commute to the designated work location (hybrid).

Responsibilities

Model power system components for short circuit studies.
Use substation metering and relaying diagrams to model protection zones.
Gather event information for event analysis (weather, faults).
Fulfilling data modelling for transmission portfolio delivery and capital projects.
Respond to short circuit study requests from departments (MISO, ISP).
Perform data reporting and analysis on power system network.
