Job summary

Xcel Energy in Denver is offering a Grid Operations Engineering internship designed for engineering students. You will gain hands-on experience in power system operations and work within the Distribution Control Center, supporting ADMS software and related tools.

Ideal candidates are enrolled in ABET-accredited programs and pursuing engineering degrees (Electrical preferred). The internship runs in summer with potential extension, and requires in-person commuting under our hybrid policy.

Qualifications

• Current student, Freshman or higher (as of Fall 2027).
• Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university pursuing an Engineering degree (Electrical preferred).
• Some field visits but no routine travel required.
• Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours/week) or part-time during school year (up to 20 hours/week) and commute in-person to the designated location per hybrid policy.

Responsibilities

• Supporting model tuning and tracking non-communicating devices.
• Assisting with alarm limits and special projects or Grid Operations Engineering (GOE) focuses.
• Working with Engineering staff to support the Distribution Control Center and enable ADMS software.
• Performing entry-level engineering analyst tasks supporting tools, programs, and databases for outage coordination, power flow studies, and power system monitoring.
• Gaining practical operations experience and mentoring to build professional confidence and people skills.
