Job description

Support and consistently reinforce the Mission and Core Values of M&D Mechanical Contractors, Inc. A Power Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of large machinery utilized in industrial construction projects. They play a pivotal role in executing tasks related to excavation, material handling, and other specialized projects. With proficiency in interpreting site plans and adhering to stringent safety protocols (line identification), these operators collaborate closely with other site workers to ensure timely and effective project launch. Assist plumbers and pipefitters to lay pipe when not operating equipment. Routine maintenance checks, and prompt reporting of equipment malfunctions. Through their technical expertise and precision, Power Equipment Operators create the foundation for executing construction projects

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Safe Operation: Operating power machinery while ensuring safety guidelines and best practices are followed.
  • Maintenance: Conducting routine checks and maintenance tasks on equipment to ensure optimal functionality including oil and grease.
  • Compliance: Adhering to safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and other industry-specific standards.
  • Communication: Collaborating and communicating effectively with other site workers, project managers, and superintendents.
  • Training: Maintain equipment operating certifications as required
  • Site Preparation: Assisting in setting up and preparing sites for construction including underground line identification.
  • Earthmoving: Operating equipment like excavators and backhoes, and to move and excavate earth while maintaining grades.
  • Material Handling: Using cranes, forklifts, skid loaders, or other machinery to load, unload, transport, and place materials.
  • Grading: Ability to identify and read grades to level surfaces.
  • Trench Digging: Operating trenches or excavators to dig trenches for utilities or pipelines.
  • Installation: Assist tradesmen to lay pipes for gas or plumbing under or above ground.
  • Documentation: Logging hours of operation in load charts, maintenance activities, and any issues encountered during operation.
  • Inspection: Performing daily inspections of equipment to identify wear and tear or potential hazards.
  • Signal Coordination: Working with signalers or ground personnel to coordinate machine movements, especially in tight or congested areas.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

  • Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent
  • Previous experience with equipment operation
  • Required to read and write English, follow verbal instructions and perform simple math
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in equipment operation such as excavators, backhoes, skid loaders, lifts
  • Ability to read and comprehend project drawings and grades
  • Must be detail oriented and organized
  • Must be able to identify underground line locations
  • Must be able to manage multiple task and schedule requirements
  • Strong TEAM player

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

Employee may be required to do the following: climbing ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level; maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds structures, etc.; reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing; sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; crawling; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

Employee may be required to do the following: following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; planning work and selecting proper tools; comparing and understanding differences in the size, shape and form of lines, figures, and objects; picturing and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked, following oral and/or written directions, plans and blueprints; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.

WORK ENVIROMENT FACTORS:

  • Location: industrial construction sites and/or office environment
  • Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways
  • Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately indoor climate; various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc., potential exposure to chemical substances.
