Job description

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an NIH-funded position in the lab of Prof. Andrew Gulick within the Department of Structural Biology, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo.

The Gulick Lab investigates the structural enzymology of proteins involved in the biosynthesis of bacterial natural products. Through combinations of structural biology, biochemical characterization, protein engineering, and biocatalysis, we aim to explore the ability of bacteria to produce diverse small molecules that are produced to help them adapt to the challenges of surviving in diverse environments.

The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for:

• protein production, purification, and analysis, including development and implementation of biochemical assays
• informatic and genome mining to identify, characterize, and understand the diverse biosynthetic pathways of bacterial sources
• protein structure determination through X-ray crystallography and/or cryo-electron microscopy and single particle analysis
• Data analysis, maintenance, and interpretation, including contributions on authoring publications and dissemination of research

Minimum Qualifications

• PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field
• Background in protein biochemistry, enzymology, biophysical analysis, or structural biology
• Ability to analyze, publish, and present research data
• Self-motivation, ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a team. Ability to manage time and organization on multiple projects

Preferred Qualifications

• Interest in natural product biosynthesis, including pathway reconstitution, genetic manipulation, small molecule isolation and characterization
• Expertise in enzymology, including assay development, LC-MS and HPLC analysis
• Experience with X-ray crystallographic analysis and protein structure determination or single particle cryo-electron microscopy structure determination and analysis
• Familiarity with computation tools for protein structure determination and analysis.

Salary Range

Salary Range $55,000 - $65,000
