Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar – Membrane Chemist to advance recyclable membranes for aqueous flow batteries. You will design and synthesize novel polymer membranes, study ion transport and stability, and develop methods to recover and regenerate membrane materials at end of life.

You will lead experimental work at the intersection of sustainable materials, electrochemistry, and energy storage, with opportunities for publications and national-lab collaboration.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field, awarded within the last three years or before start date.
• Hands-on experience in synthetic polymer chemistry: monomer synthesis, polymerization, purification, characterization (NMR, FTIR, thermal analysis).
• Experience fabricating polymer films/membranes and measuring transport properties (impedance-based conductivity, permeability, swelling).

Responsabilités

• Design and synthesize microporous polymer membranes to tune ion transport and stability.
• Fabricate membranes with controlled thickness and swelling; measure relevant properties in flow-battery electrolytes.
• Develop membrane deconstruction chemistry and recover/re-manufacture monomers for regeneration cycles.
• Profile membranes across lifecycle using NMR, LC-MS, FTIR, thermal and mechanical analyses.
• Coordinate with PNNL collaborators on flow-cell validation and data analysis.
• Write manuscripts and invention disclosures; present at program reviews and scientific meetings.
