Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in synthetic organic chemistry to design, synthesize, purify, and characterize small molecules and heterocycles, with emphasis on energetic materials and flow synthesis. Work within the Energetic Materials Center and collaborate across the Materials Science Division.

The role focuses on developing continuous flow methods, multistep syntheses, purification strategies, and advanced analytical characterization (NMR, HPLC, MS).

Qualifications

• U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
• PhD in Synthetic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.
• Experience designing and optimizing synthetic routes with modern organic techniques.
• Hands-on continuous-flow chemistry including flow reactors and workflows.
• Scale-up experience of telescoped and flow processes (crystallization, separations).
• Ability to analyze data and relate findings to structure and properties.
• Experience with purification and characterization using analytical methods.
• Ability to conduct independent research and work in multidisciplinary teams.
• Proven record publishing, reporting, and presenting results.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute, and optimize synthetic routes with flow methods.
• Apply analytical techniques (NMR, HPLC, MS, IR, UV) to characterize compounds.
• Analyze data to relate structure, processing and properties.
• Document findings in technical reports and publications.
• Present results to sponsors and scientific community.
• Develop independent research directions aligned with program goals.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners on multidisciplinary projects.
• Manage research activities to meet timelines and deliverables.
