Job summary

Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in Battery Materials & Electrochemical Energy Storage to lead electrode fabrication, material processing, and full cell assembly with advanced characterization.

The role focuses on understanding how electrode and interfacial structures evolve during cycling and aging, employing XRD, EM, XPS, and synchrotron techniques, while mentoring students and contributing to proposals and manuscripts.

Qualifications

• PhD in a relevant field completed within the last few years.
• Hands-on experience synthesizing and/or processing battery materials.
• Experience assembling and testing electrochemical cells (coin cells) in inert atmosphere.
• Knowledge of electrochemical characterization techniques (galvanostatic cycling, impedance spectroscopy).
• Experience with operando/in situ electrochemical characterization for SEI evolution.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate electrodes and assemble electrochemical cells under controlled conditions (glovebox/dry room).
• Synthesize and process battery active materials and composites.
• Conduct electrochemical testing and characterization including rate testing and impedance spectroscopy.
• Perform structural/interfacial characterization using XRD, EM, and spectroscopy.
• Organize and manage data per lab policies and open science guidelines.
• Plan experiments at synchrotron or user facilities and assist with beamtime proposals.
• Publish findings and present at group meetings and conferences.
• Mentor graduate students and visiting scientists.
